Dean's Message

Welcome to the 2015-16 academic year.

Drawing upon our 140 years as leaders in dentistry teaching and innovation, the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto is committed to building upon our strengths across research, education, and clinical practice. With over 250 staff and faculty, and nearly 600 Clinical Associates, we provide our students with the skills necessary to excel in their chosen profession.

We pursue research, teaching and clinical excellence across disciplines. In addition to offering research-based MSc and PhD degrees, we are unique in offering graduate programs in all 10 dental specialties. We graduate approximately 100 Doctor of Dental Surgery students every year, and with over 100 MSc and 30 PhD students enrolled, our graduate cohort is the largest in Canada.

Yet, our strength as a Faculty comes not in numbers but from the passionate engagement of our students, faculty and staff. As we provide essential health services to the wider community, we also enrich our students’ learning experience through community outreach opportunities, extra-curricular programming, and events.

This academic calendar serves as an important resource for the year ahead. More than sessional dates and curriculum information, you will also find here helpful information on awards and financial aid, as well as a brief introduction to our Student Services Office, led by our Faculty’s Registrar, Margaret Edghill, and to support provided by our Director of Student Life, Dr. Richard Rayman. I encourage you to reach out to both Ms. Edghill and Dr. Rayman, who will be of invaluable assistance to you during your time here. They can put you in touch with the resources you may require – from peer mentors to on-campus support programming, and can guide you to any of the services you may require.

Finally, I invite you to become involved with our active community, rich with social engagements, community volunteerism, sports, and more. We will strive to stay in touch through our Faculty newsletter and bi-annual U of T Dentistry magazine, which is also mailed out to our nearly 8,000 alumni, but we also hope to hear from you.

Wishing you a rewarding and successful year ahead,

Daniel Haas,

Dean, Faculty of Dentistry
