Fellowship in Special Care Dentistry

Duration: 12 months
Start Date: Rolling acceptance
Location: Sinai Health Department of Dentistry
Pediatric Dentistry Department, University of Toronto

The aim of the Fellowship in Special Care Dentistry is to provide the trainee experience and develop expertise in the diagnosis and management of the dental needs of patients who have medical, physical and/or behavioral issues that prevent appropriate care in a community practice setting.

The Special Care Dentistry Program has been an integral part of  the Sinai Dental Department program for almost 50 years and is the only centre of its kind in Ontario.  Adult patients with complex and high-risk medical conditions, and disabilities are referred from throughout the Province to have care provided in our hospital setting.

Trainees will develop expertise in:

  • Reviewing and triaging patients for treatment in clinic, the operating room (OR) or a home environment
  • Understanding the protocols associated with hospital-based treatment in the OR
  • Appropriate home care protocols for ongoing maintenance of dental health

The one-year Fellowship in Special Care Dentistry will combine rotations at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry for lectures/seminars, the Department of Dentistry at Sinai Health (University Ave. campus) for outpatient management of the Special Needs patient, and the dental operating room at Sinai Health.  Additionally, clinical research will be a component of the program, with a focus on clinical decision making and treatment outcomes in the Special Needs population.

Remuneration
Fellows will receive a stipend of $78,000 per year inclusive of benefits. The application is open with a rolling acceptance based on availability to start the program.
