Dentantics 2025: “Watching TV After Clinic”
By Rachel Boutet
February 28th marked the Faculty’s annual Dentantics show – a night of entertainment featuring dancing, singing and acting from the extraordinary dentistry student body.
“This year, as the Faculty marks 150 years of dental education, we celebrate all parts of what makes us special – including this annual show I know we all look forward to,” says interim dean Laura Tam. “Dentantics will always hold a special place in my heart – I myself was a member of the “girls’ dance numbers” in my third year. While the program has definitely changed – and improved – over the years, the fun that’s had by both the performers and audience remains the same.”
The student members of the Dentantics Committee who brought the show to life included: Anabelle Ng, Rebecca Kassaw, Omar Alawazi, Sandy Koussa, Madie Narbonne, David Leung and the two hosts, Natalie Modreanu and Shanzeh Khan. The Committee decided on the theme “Watching TV After Clinic” for this year’s show.
“We both love unwinding after a long day of clinic with tv shows or movies and we know a lot of our class feels the same way,” says Khan. “We wanted this year to feel like you are at home with us just enjoying a good show.”
This year’s proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the U of T’s Faculty of Dentistry’s Access to Care fund, which provides financial assistance to low-income patients who might not otherwise be able to afford dental treatment at the Faculty. This year’s show raised approximately $7,000 for the fund.
Khan admits when she initially got involved with Dentantics, she didn’t fully realize the responsibility she was taking on.
“You get elected as class rep in first year after a couple of weeks of school – Natalie and I became friends right away and I ended up convincing her to run with me for Dentantics representatives,” says Khan. “At the time, I thought the position entailed making a graduation video in fourth year and I loved the U of T Dentistry graduation YouTube video. It was only after our speech and after winning the position that the DSS president at the time let us know that Dentantics is much more than that…and oh boy, is it!”
Khan adds that although it’s been a lot of work, she and Modreanu loved the show and have had so much fun participating in it for the past two years.
“We think both of us are lucky that we were friends outside of Dentantics so meeting up and planning the show has always been easy for us,” says Modreanu. “We are also really fortunate to be in the same clinic session so a lot of our brainstorming is done at lunch times in between clinics. Of course, it is difficult at times to balance the deadlines that come with Dentantics and our exam schedule, but starting early on in the year and staying organized has really helped. Our love for Dentantics makes even those stressful times worth it.”
