“Passionate advocate,” associate professor Carlos Quiñonez, recognized with Canadian Dental Association’s Award of Merit

Associate professor Carlos Quiñonez was honoured with the Canadian Dental Association’s Award of Merit at its annual general meeting on April 12. Dubbed a “passionate advocate” by CDA president Mitch Taillon in a speech introducing the award, Quiñonez was cited for a distinguished career “which has focused on the care of underserviced populations, and on health and social equity.”

The CDA Award of Merit recognizes an individual who serves in an outstanding capacity in the governing or service of the Canadian Dental Association, or one who has made remarkable contributions to the dental profession, the community or the oral health of Canadians or society “at large.”

Quiñonez who is the graduate program director in dental public health at the Faculty, is an avid researcher whose “work has been used as a reference for those seeking evidence-based data to address issues related to the treatment of vulnerable populations and access to care,” said Taillon.

In his acceptance speech, Quiñonez, who is also active on a number of boards, committees and panels, argued that, “Awards like these, while given to individuals, represent the culmination of the work and help of many.”
