Q&A: Dean’s Gold Medal Winner and DSS President
Dave Dunbar is this year's DSS President and Dean's Gold Medal Winner for the Class of 2023. The Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations caught up with Dave after his Licensing and Awards Ceremony on June 9, 2023, to learn more about his experience at U of T Dentistry.
Overall, how would you describe your student experience at the Faculty over the last four years?
To me, patient care has been and will always be the most meaningful aspect of dental school. While I will cherish the memories of my extracurricular involvement, nothing will top the feelings of service and achievement like translating skills learned in preclinical labs to clinical care to aid a person in need. The impact of our clinics on the community is tremendous, as we provide high quality treatment at a subsidized cost.
What is something you know now that you didn’t know about yourself when you started in first year?
When I first arrived in 2019, I didn’t realize that I had the ability to be organized enough to aid a class full of intelligent and capable humans. I had a strong desire to get involved, as I wanted to make the most of my experience, but once I assumed new roles, I felt a strong sense of obligation to do justice by the opportunity. I worked hard and grew into a person that others could rely on during stressful periods—something that I would have not anticipated in myself during my undergraduate degree.
What are your professional and personal hopes as you start your career?
I am lucky to be attending the University of Michigan to complete a Masters in Periodontics, starting in July. After graduation, I have aspirations to split my time in clinical care, academia, various clubs, CE courses, and whatever other opportunities come my way. I would absolutely love the ability to teach, and I intend on honing my skills in photography and videography to accomplish this goal.
How do you think the school prepared you for your next steps as a professional?
U of T Dentistry is truly the gold standard. Our didactic education is exceptionally thorough, and the scope of treatment opportunities in our clinics is incredible. The support we receive from the day we arrive to the day we leave is remarkable, leaving each student with a feeling of competence and confidence as we enter the workforce as graduates.
What advice would you give the students who are considering U of T Dentistry?
There is no better option. You truly get the full experience at U of T. The quality of education speaks for itself, but the lively city, large class size, and breadth of extracurricular opportunities means there’s an unforgettable path for every student. After four years at this school, you will not only be an incredible young dentist, but you will grow into an exceptional person—one you might not have recognized the day you began your journey.
