Dentistry Students give back through running

By Nina Ambros

After going virtual for the past two years, the annual Rayman’s Run went ahead in full force back in-person on October 16, 2022, with over 40 U of T Dentistry student runners. Students had the option of running a 5km, half marathon or full marathon along the beautiful Toronto waterfront.

Their fundraising efforts extended beyond running, as students from all years purchased dental accessories, raffle tickets, and Halloween candy grams to support the cause. Together, they raised over $2,600 for Make-A-Wish Canada.

“Lots of friendships were made through this experience, with practice runs lead by upper year students and team meals” says Ocarina Zheng, 2T5 Student.

In her role as the Dental Student Society’s VP of Community Outreach, Ocarina was responsible for helping to organize this year’s event, down to every detail. Her classmate, Athena Zhao, designed the 2022 logo.

“We just really wanted to come together and find a meaningful way to give back to our community” says Zheng.

Rayman’s Run, started with just a few fourth-year Dentistry students over eight years ago, and quickly grew into the annual community gathering that it is today.

The event is named after the Faculty of Dentistry’s Dr. Richard Rayman, Director of Student Life, whose dedication to running has been the inspiration that motivated students to cultivate this yearly tradition.

This December marks 44 years since Dr. Rayman has been running daily, the 20th longest active running streak in the world. He also has completed 389 marathons over the years.

“There are many benefits to running beyond fitness. The impact on mental health and the camaraderie that you develop is remarkable” says Dr. Rayman.

In his role as Director of Student Life, Dr. Rayman recognizes the importance of promoting health and wellness for students at the Faculty of Dentistry.

Running can reduce stress, depression, and anxiety. Recent studies have suggested that exercise such as running is an all-natural treatment to fight depression.
