Empowering Dreams in Dentistry: U of T Summer Mentorship Program

This summer, in a welcome return to in-person sessions for 2023, the Faculty of Dentistry welcomed 110 enthusiastic high school students through the University of Toronto Summer Mentorship Program.  The SMP is an exceptional initiative that offers a transformative experience for high school students of Indigenous or African ancestry in grades 10 to 12. Celebrating its 18th year at Dentistry, this program serves as a crucial platform to nurture young talent and promote diversity within the health sciences field.

Over 30 U of T Doctor of Dental Surgery student volunteers offered mentorship to this year's high school Summer Mentorship Program participants.

"Through the SMP, the Faculty of Dentistry is fostering a culture of mentorship and giving back to the community.” says Dr. Laura Tam.

The program commenced with a captivating presentation from Dean Tam and Dr. Posluns, providing invaluable insights into the world of dentistry.  A panel of dental students took the stage, offering personal anecdotes and answering questions, sharing their unique journeys in the health sciences. The International Dentist Advanced Placement Program (IDAPP) students inspired the audience, emphasizing the significance of following one's passion and the commitment to continuous learning.

Guided by over 30 dental student mentors, each group of high school students was led to the simulation lab. Here, they were given hands-on experience, trying on personal protective equipment (PPE), and immersing themselves in the life of a dental student. The latest dental technology, including digital patient software, was showcased, and the participants were shown how to take dental impressions.

Staff volunteers
The success of the SMP largely relies on dedicated volunteers and staff, such as Lucy Ferraro (middle), administrative clinical program coordinator, who has organized it for the past 18 years.

The SMP's impact extends beyond the program's duration. By empowering high-achieving students with exposure to diverse health sciences, the SMP opens doors to numerous career possibilities. The mentorship and guidance provided serve as invaluable tools, encouraging these young minds to pursue their dreams with confidence and resilience.

“I had a student reach out to me, who attended the program ten years ago, with news of their acceptance into dental school in the United States. They fondly recalled the dental impression they made during the program. It was truly heartwarming to hear.” says Ferraro.

Testimonials like this one exemplify the lasting impact of mentorship and how the program fuels passion and determination in aspiring health professionals. Overall, the University of Toronto's Summer Mentorship Program is a remarkable undertaking that showcases the institution's commitment to fostering diversity in health sciences and inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals. With every passing year, this program continues to make a lasting impact on young lives, propelling them towards successful careers in the ever-evolving world of health sciences.

2023 Summer Mentorship Program Participant Testimonials:

SMP students

"I enjoyed everything about dentistry! I was not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did especially since I was never interested in dentistry. I learned how they prep for patients, polish teeth, take and fill impressions along with so much more. 10/10 experience!"

SMP students

"I think the best part of the visit to the UofT Dentistry was the time we spent with the Dentist in training. I think it was a wonderful idea to split us into small groups of 4s. These small groups made it very easy to ask questions about the practice."

SMP students

"I liked how the dental students were very down to earth and approachable. They really tried to make the experience as entertaining as possible and were very understanding."
