U of T Startup Raises $675,000 in Funding

By Rachel Boutet

Mesosil, a Faculty of Dentistry startup led by CEO Cameron Stewart, recently received $675,000 in financing led by the Archangel Network of Funds and NorthSpring Capital Partners.

The company, which launched in early 2018, has the potential to revolutionize fillings by developing responsive antimicrobial materials to prevent infection at the medical device-tissue interface, with lifetime length of effect. This helps address the current issue of bacteria wedging its way between fillings and the tooth which can lead to even worse infections and decay.

The new funds will help Mesosil scale up production of material and grow the team to meet demands.

β€œThis past year has been really exciting – we completed a pre-clinical animal study and are working quickly to develop a range of bioactive dental materials with an industrial partner,” says Stewart, who is currently a postdoctoral fellow for Professor Yoav Finer. β€œThis funding will help us expand into new applications of technology within and outside of dentistry. I’m looking forward to the day soon when our materials will be used to help patients.”
