Clerkship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

You will have the opportunity to live the life of a junior Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery resident. 

Two students at a time can spend two weeks rotating through:

  • Mount Sinai Hospital
  • Sunnybrook Hospital
  • Humber River Hospital 

Offered by the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) program at the Faculty of Dentistry, you will:

  • attend the operating rooms 
  • attend surgeries
  • participate in rounds
  • take part in presentations and seminars. 

Who can apply

Any Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) student in a program recognized by the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) or the American Dental Association (ADA). 

You do not need to be a student at the University of Toronto to apply.

Ideally, you will be in the second or third year of your DDS.

What is available and when

There are six rotations available in 2024:

  • June 3 - 14
  • June 17 - 28
  • July 2 - 12
  • July 15 - 26
  • July 29 - August 9
  • August 12 - 23

Costs and duration

The Clerkship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery lasts two weeks and costs $400 CAD ($200 for current University of Toronto DDS students).

How to apply

Application deadline: April 1 2024

Complete the below steps, sending all documents and payment to the Admissions Office.

  1. Complete the application form (PDF) letting us know your preferred dates (we will try our best to allocate your preferred dates, but there is no guarantee).
  2. Send the $50 CAD application service fee (bank draft or money order payable to the University of Toronto). Pay online by credit card on the Student Services Payment page.
  3. Two letters of recommendation showing evidence of a desire for OMFS studies and the capacity to participate in a strenuous and challenging environment.
  4. Your Curriculum Vitae or resume together with a covering letter of Intent.
  5. Official dental school transcript or a letter from dental school stating your enrollment status.

We will only contact you if you have been successful.

If you are accepted, you will need to send us, before starting:

  • A current Tuberculin Test and/or negative chest x-ray (must be within three months of starting the clerkship)
  • Evidence of current immunization against Rubella, Tetanus, Polio and Hepatitis B
  • Canadian Red Cross Society or St. John Ambulance course in First Aid (or its equivalent) and a CPR Basic Rescuer course.
  • Your fee. All costs are in Canadian Dollars and need to be paid by certified cheque (payable to the University of Toronto).
  • Malpractice Insurance under Canadian University Reciprocal Insurance Exchange /or University of Toronto Risk Management Insurance (non U of T applicants only)
  • Evidence of health insurance (international applicants only).
